Dining on the River
Summer’s here, and it’s about time you got down to the river

Located on a quiet, almost desolate patch of Garden Highway, Swabbies is about as far away from Sacramento as you can get and still be in Sacramento.

First-time visitors to Swabbies Restaurant may be forgiven for thinking they’ve missed it.  There’s a sign on Garden Highway, but it comes miles beyond anything but homes and farms.  “It’s hard to find and no one can get to it, but we’ve turned that to our advantage,” said Christopher Barabino, who with his wife, Michelle, has owned Swabbies since 2006.

Swabbies Restaurant & Bar is not only far out of the way about 20 miles north of downtown Sacramento at 5871 Garden Highway, but it is also hard to find. Even people who know where it is drive past the place (see story, page S-5 in the Fastest Growing Companies pullout).
Once you find it, Swabbies boasts a river view, a marina and a vast outdoor dining area, replete with picnic tables, folding chairs and free bug spray.

Live This City: Mighty fun along the mighty Sacramento

Sacramento Bee - Swabbies Bar & Restaurant Review Tucked quietly near Sacramento International Airport along a sleepy, tree-lined stretch of Garden Highway, Swabbies on the River Restaurant & Bar is a big place, but it's not easy to find by car. That's not an issue for most of the restaurant's patrons, however. They arrive in Sacramento River style – on boats. And it seems everyone else gets to Swabbies on a motorcycle, especially those of the Harley-Davidson variety.

Try looking at it this way: Everyone who's anyone on the Sacramento River knows about Swabbies, and if you don't, you obviously don't own a boat (or you aren't lucky enough to know anyone who has one). The quirky, family-owned and -operated establishment isn't recognizable by name to many landlocked Sacramentans, yet those who have ventured there and successfully found the place are fiercely and irrevocably in love.

And like all great romances, Swabbies is especially magical during the summer, when live music plays late into the night, spilling out over the serene river and up toward the starlit sky.
